The London Embroidery Conference 2017:
This year I attended The London Embroidery Conference at Hand & Lock. Over the course of the day the talks were divided into three areas: ‘Heritage’, ‘The Now’ and ‘The Future’. Each topic was explored with the help of a panel discussion, expert guest speakers and a hosted Q&A session.
Heritage’, ‘The Now’ and ‘The Future’ of embroidery are three essential points that as a demonstrator, artist and technician I try to embody within all aspects of my practice. These topics are key to any teaching practitioner, ‘Heritage’= history of embroidery, ‘The Now’ = what’s happening now in embroidery, ‘The Future’= where is embroidery heading.
The Speakers included director of the Textile Research Centre, Dr Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood / Artistic Director of the Embroiderers Guild, Anthea Godfrey / Principal Costume Embroiderer on Game of Thrones, Michele Carragher / Fashion Historian, Amber Butchart / Senior Curators of the Imperial War Museum, Alan Jeffreys and Martin Boswell / Embroidery Designer Justine Avril / Trend Forecaster, Geraldine Wharry
