WOVEN IN KIRKLEES

WOVEN is a Kirklees Council initiative that has been created in partnership and collaboration with cultural organisations, artists, education settings, businesses, industry and heritage sites across the district. WOVEN’s theme is generations of innovators, connecting a strong heritage with today’s innovative developments in industry, university research, a strong arts and crafts scene and the creative expression of the district’s rich and diverse communities.

Elnaz Yazdani teaches workshops for schools across Kirklees during the Woven festival.

Future Fashion Challenge

Working with Moorlands Primary School on the ‘Future Fashion Challenge’ as part of the 2019 Woven in Kirklees festival. Elnaz worked with the school to deliver embroidery lessons in beading and hand couching to create embellishment designs. The pieces were then stitched together to make a collection of outfits and shown on a catwalk show as part of the festival.

The children were asked to imagine what future fashion might look like and what environmental factors face the fashion industry. They decided to look at plastic pollution and find ways to recycle objects that they could turn into beautiful embroidery embellishments. Collecting plastic bottle tops, ties, straws, fabrics and using their drawings they designed a wonderful collection of embroidery samples ready for the catwalk!
