Growing colour Together

Elnaz Yazdani was project manager of the WOVEN In Kirklees 2023 project Growing Colour Together. Funded by Kirklees Council and Arts Council England and ran by Hatch Projects.

Growing Colour Together is more than a project, it’s a MOVEMENT! And our ambition is to create a district-wide, natural-dye, colour garden!

Working in partnership across the district we want to give everyone the opportunity to ‘have a grow,’ use what’s grown to make natural dyes, and learn about the environmental implications of chemical dyes and what we buy.

Growing Colour Together is an evolving project and we want people to join in with the areas that interest you. Grow, make, create, debate!

WOVEN and partners are excited by notions of active citizenship, citizen growers and makers and for Kirklees residents to take ownership of the programme.

Over the last year we have set up three community hub projects in which 7 artist have been working in residency with communities to develop gardens and new work, we have given out 15 small grants of £100 to get community groups and schools started with their colour gardens, hosted 3 international  talks with speakers from America, Canada and Mexico and , set up an online platform to share practice and to find new practitioners. We ran a series of community and artist CPD sessions including foraging walks, natural dye tours and a growing colour together Symposium at the University of Huddersfield.

The WOVEN in Kirklees Festival was established in 2019 to celebrate the rich textile heritage of the district and to highlight the current innovation and passion for textiles here in Kirklees. The WOVEN festival is initiated by Kirklees Council but owned by everyone with over 50% of events this year led by you, our valued partners, community organisations and individuals across Kirklees. This year we have had funding from Arts Council England to support the project and Mayors Funding.
